Rajesh Chiroli, a lawyer who is representing Hisham’s family, urged the government to send him away before he died.

“The man died in such a horrifying way while under custody,” the lawyer tweeted. “Send him immediately before he dies.”

According to reports by local media, Hisham was held as a convicted murderer.

After his arrest, he was tortured repeatedly. He was kept in a cold cell for almost a half of a year because he was suffering from an enlarged heart. He was also kept awake for a prolonged period, said Ghulam Nabi, a medical practitioner who examined him last week. In order for inmates to be transferred to the prison’s infirmary, they must be treated as if they are having a heart attack, he said.

“He had an abnormal heart rhythm,” Dr. Nabi said. “He had three times the normal number of spasm in the arm,” the medical practitioner added.

The police later released Hisham back into the custody of his family.

His widow and daughters had filed criminal complaints against several police officers including the district police officer (DPO), and police inspector for negligence. They are also now seeking compensation and legal intervention.

Ghulam Nabi said that there had been no medical examination of him. When he was admitted to the hospital, he was not dressed in proper clothing and was given some clothes that were dirty and unwashed, he said. One policeman also threw water at the patient in order to cover him up.

After doctors found he had a heart attack, he had to make his last efforts by himself before the guards removed him from the infirmary.

“For the last few days, he was in such a dreadful state that doctors have come at a standstill,” Dr. Nabi said. “He had two metal rods sticking out of his abdomen.”

The doctor said that he would now have a new heart and he would recover from his condition quickly.
